The Nicholas Project – A Relief Angels Pet Rescue Program

Relief Angels is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit disaster response organization committed to helping people through every stage of crisis – from emergency evacuation to long-term recovery. But as we have served our communities and adapted to the needs on the frontline of disasters, one truth has become impossible to ignore: Animals are victims too!!!!

Thats why we created The Nicholas Project – a compassionate extension of our mission and a dedicated pet rescue program based in Klamath County, Oregon, with the heartful prayer of expansion into more communities in need.

Nicholas Alexander served as our vice president and Grant County coordinator. From the beginning, he was instrumental in shaping the vision of the initiative. His goal was to launch the program in Grant, Lake, Klamath, and Harney counties. Nicholas planned to take the lead in Grant and Harney, while Valerie O’Dai would handle efforts in Klamath and Lake County regions.

Tragically, Nicholas passed away in a car accident just one month before the program was set to launch. In recognition of his passion, dedication, and the foundational role he played, the board of directors unanimously voted to rename Operation Pet Rescue to The Nicholas Project—a lasting tribute to the heart and spirit he brought to this mission.

What We Do in His Honor

🆘Emergency Animal Rescue

We respond quickly when animals are displaced, abandoned, or endangered during disasters. Whether due to wildfire, flooding, or family crisis our team is ready to offer safety, shelter, and hope.

❤️‍🩹Owner Surrender Support ❤️‍🩹

We understand that life can change unexpectedly. Through The Nicholas Project we provide a judgement-free compassionate surrender process for pet owners facing hardship. Whether due to financial instability, illnesses, or housing insecurity, we help families make the most humane and dignified choice for their beloved pets.

🩺Medical and Behavioral Rehabilitation🩺

Every animal in our care receives individualized attention – including veterinary treatment, vaccinations, spay/neuter services, therapy, and behavioral support. From medically fragile puppies like Howler (our champion) to senior dogs in need of extra TLC like 13-year-old Tucker. Speegle’s (Boots) entire body was covered in ringworm which took 3-4 months with daily care, we do everything we can to help them heal and thrive.

Foster Care Network (ALWAYS NEED MORE!!!)

With the help of over 30 dedicated foster families, animals in transition are placed in nurturing homes until they are adopted. This gives us a time to learn about each pet’s personality and needs so we can find the right forever home.

Reunification Effort

Whenever possible, we work to reunite displaced pets with their original families-especially in post disaster cases where owners may have been forced to leave animals behind

Adoption Events

Our dedicated foster families provide loving and temperary homes where animals can rest, recover, and prepare for their forever families. After a through evaluation, animals are placed for adoption through community events, partner locations, and online platforms.

One Mission. Many Lives. Endless Hope.

The Nicholas Project doesn’t take us away from our mission – it deepens it. When we care for the whole family, including the animals they love, we offer true relief and recovery.

Falling victim to a natural or civil disaster isn’t just about surviving-it’s about rebuilding. That includes every heartbreak.

What is Fostering?

Fostering means temporarily caring for a pet in your home until they find a permanent family. It’s a life-saving role that gives animals the love and stability they need to thrive. We make it easy – you provide the love; we provide the rest.

  • All food supplies are provided – no cost to you
  • We cover medical care and vet visits if needed
  • flexible commitment – short term or longer depending on what works for you
  • You are never alone – we offer full support every step of the way
  • Perfect for animal lovers – who are not ready to adopt but still want to make a difference

All they need is a little love – and you If you’ve ever thought about helping, now is the perfect time. Fostering changes their life, and often, it changes yours too.
