Carolyn and Scott – https://www.heartsofheroes.com/episode/evacuate-now/
“200 yards off the beach on 42nd Street sat a 2 story brick duplex with a nice balcony from which you could see the gulf (if you looked at an angle). More than 20 years of watching MB fireworks from a perfect vantage point. On 10/10 my son and I were going to ride out a Cat 2 or 3, cleared the yard, parked cars close to protect from the wind, etc. About 11 am it was apparent this was much more, it kept growing and growing. Too late to leave now. Surge had never reached our yard before but here it is at the door, rising. We went to the downstairs bathroom, then water was coming in both front and back doors and the wind is blowing harder and harder. We went upstairs, looking in the upstairs bathroom in time to see the roof lifting, then to the north closet, talking to family on the phone, telling them to pray. 12:12 pm central time. Looking out the closet door we see the walls and floor collapsing, threatening to trap and crush us in there. My son Scott fought his way against the door and got us out- to be able to climb and claw above them as they crumbled, maintaining his hold on the door and holding onto me at the same time. Without him it would not have been humanly possible for this 72 year old. We soon were outside 15 feet high on top of the debris, sometimes floating, coming to rest about 200 feet further north towards 98. As the heavy wind and rain continued for another 2 hours at least, we remained at Michael’s mercy and in God’s Grace, God would have won either way but He chose for us to live . We climbed down when the surge receded, made our way to one of the storm chasers who helped us get to shelter. Our everlasting thanks to the Dillards whose door swung open as he approached. (Another entire story) We were found there by by FlipFlop Flotilla (Jason) and Relief Angels (Christian) who treated our most serious wounds and reported our location, (we left Sylvia a note so she wouldn’t think the worst with all the blood we left), and tried to get us to Tyndall AFB hospital which as you know was gone also. Back to Sylvia’s for the night. We got to the hospital in Bay county the next day by ambulance. My son in law Mike Bird recently posted his account as to the search they went through finding us in a shelter in PC. We are not able to rebuild but I will always call Mexico Beach home as I will be in Overstreet and Panama City. Looking forward to the Saturday celebration. Thanks for all the prayers and support from family, friends and strangers!!”
